Looking for a way to contribute to your community while learning, making friends and having some fun? Staatsburgh State Historic Site offers several volunteer opportunities, described below, and we are always delighted to speak with prospective volunteers who have special skills and particular expertise they would like to contribute. Volunteers are an essential and highly-valued part of our team at Staatsburgh. VOLUNTEER TOUR GUIDES (Docents)
Tour guides give tours of the mansion to drop-in visitors, bus tour groups and school groups, or assist staff with these groups. Tour guides receive training, coaching and mentoring from staff before they start giving tours to the public. Guides are provided with some required reading and additional elective reading, as well as time in the house with staff to refine their presentation skills for various audiences and situations.
LIVING HISTORY INTERPRETERS
Have a passion for history, a love of dressing up and a talent for teaching creatively? Consider becoming a living history interpreter, wearing period clothing and interacting with visitors of all ages during Staatsburgh’s tours, programs and events. The site is constantly building its wardrobe of historic clothing and welcomes new participants to this program, who each receive training, staff mentoring, required and elective reading, and many opportunities to enthrall visitors.
SPECIAL EVENTS AND PROGRAMS
Staatsburgh has special events for the public during its open season, April-October. Volunteers can help with set-up, publicizing the events, greeting visitors, promoting membership in the Friends of Mills Mansion, staffing activity tables, preparing refreshments, and many other fun jobs!
After October, Staatsburgh closes for several weeks of intensive decorating for the holiday season – the entire house is festively adorned with trees, garlands, an opulent dining room table display evocative of the Gilded Age, and “hidden treasures” throughout the house. If you enjoy the festive spirit of the season and have a creative flair, we need you!
FRIENDS OF MILLS MANSION SHOP VOLUNTEERS
Museum shop volunteers answer questions, wrap items and assist the cashier during very busy times such as bus group tours and special programs.
GENERAL OFFICE VOLUNTEERS
Stuffing envelopes, entering data, sending out promotional materials and typing are perhaps not glamorous, but without this valuable help, our events and programs will not happen! Our “behind the scenes” volunteers are a very valuable asset to Staatsburgh!
Please let us know if you have experience in research, fundraising, cataloging, gardening, sewing or other areas.
